DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE RETAINER - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240242740 titled 'DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE RETAINER

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a retainer designed to prevent movement of dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) inserted into connectors on a printed circuit board, reducing the risk of electrical discontinuity caused by operational vibration.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • The retainer inhibits movement of DIMMs at the connector level to maintain a stable connection.
  • It is specifically designed to secure taller DIMMs, such as 2U and 4U DIMMs.
  • The retainer is independent of the system-level chassis design and does not obstruct airflow to the DIMMs and connectors.

Potential Applications: The technology can be applied in various electronic systems where DIMMs are used, such as servers, computers, and networking equipment.

Problems Solved: The retainer addresses the issue of intermittent electrical discontinuity between DIMMs and the PCB caused by operational vibration.

Benefits:

  • Improved reliability and stability of DIMM connections.
  • Reduced risk of electrical issues due to movement of DIMMs.
  • Easy to implement independently of system design.

Commercial Applications: The technology can be utilized in the manufacturing of servers, computers, and other electronic devices to enhance the reliability of DIMM connections, potentially reducing maintenance costs and downtime.

Prior Art: Readers can explore prior patents related to DIMM retention mechanisms and vibration mitigation in electronic systems to gain a deeper understanding of the existing technology landscape.

Frequently Updated Research: Stay informed about the latest developments in DIMM retention mechanisms and vibration mitigation in electronic systems to ensure the most up-to-date information on this technology.

Questions about DIMM Retainer: 1. What are the key benefits of using a DIMM retainer in electronic systems? 2. How does the DIMM retainer prevent electrical discontinuity between DIMMs and the PCB?

Original Abstract Submitted

a retainer to inhibit movement of dual in-line memory modules (dimms) that are removably inserted into connectors attached to a printed circuit board (pcb) of a system. inhibiting movement of the dimms, especially taller dimms, such as the higher height 2 u and 4 u dimms, mitigates the effects of operational vibration causing intermittent electrical discontinuity between dimm and the pcb. the retainer inhibits movement of dimms at the connector component level by constraining all or a portion of top edges of dimms inserted into connectors. the retainer is implemented independently of the design of the system-level chassis. the retainer is shaped into any of a bracket or frame from multiple rigid horizontal, vertical and oblique members that permit airflow to the dimms and connectors retained therein.
