SLEEP APNEA DETECTION USING WEARABLE DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240268755 titled 'SLEEP APNEA DETECTION USING WEARABLE DEVICE

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a method for monitoring sensor signals from a device worn during sleep cycles to detect multiple sleep sessions. These sessions are then combined based on collected data to estimate the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) and determine if the user has sleep apnea.

  • Continuous monitoring of sensor signals during sleep cycles
  • Detection of multiple sleep sessions
  • Combining selected sleep sessions based on collected data
  • Estimation of the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI)
  • Determination of sleep apnea based on the AHI

Potential Applications: 1. Sleep monitoring devices for individuals at risk of sleep apnea 2. Healthcare applications for diagnosing sleep disorders 3. Research tools for studying sleep patterns and disorders

Problems Solved: 1. Efficient detection of sleep apnea during multiple sleep sessions 2. Accurate estimation of the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) 3. Streamlined analysis of sensor data for sleep monitoring

Benefits: 1. Early detection of sleep apnea for timely intervention 2. Improved accuracy in diagnosing sleep disorders 3. Enhanced understanding of individual sleep patterns

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Sleep Monitoring Technology for Healthcare Industry This technology can be utilized in medical devices for sleep clinics, hospitals, and home monitoring systems. It can also be integrated into wearable devices for personal sleep tracking.

Questions about Sleep Monitoring Technology: 1. How does the method of combining sleep sessions improve the accuracy of detecting sleep apnea? 2. What are the potential implications of using this technology in home sleep monitoring devices?

Original Abstract Submitted

while a user is wearing a device during one or more sleep cycles, sensor signals are continuously monitored to detect a plurality of sleep sessions occurring during the one or more sleep cycles. based on the sensor signals, amounts of valid spodata collected for the plurality of sleep sessions are measured. a merged sleep session is generated by combining selected sleep sessions of the plurality of sleep sessions occurring in a same sleep cycle based on a maximum amount of time between the selected sleep sessions and the amounts of valid spodata collected for the selected sleep sessions. an estimated apnea hypopnea index (eahi) is estimated for the one or more sleep sessions including the merged sleep session. an indication of whether the user has sleep apnea is generated based on one or more of the eahis for the one or more sleep cycles.
