a headset for enhanced reality applications comprises a light source to provide a collimated beam and a beam expander. the beam expander includes a first optical element that receives the collimated beam and provides a first expanded beam in a first direction, a second optical element that receives the first expanded beam in the first direction and provides a second expanded beam in a second direction, and a display. the display includes a liquid crystal layer to receive the second expanded beam and a pixelated electrode layer to activate a selected portion of the liquid crystal layer and provide a pixelated image to a user of the headset.
