this application relates to a communication method and apparatus. one example method includes: receiving configuration information from a first network device, wherein the configuration information is for configuring a second terminal device to switch to communicate with a third network device via a first terminal device, the configuration information comprises information about a first timer, and the information about the first timer is for a path switch; starting the first timer; and in response to receiving the configuration information, sending a radio resource control (rrc) reconfiguration complete message to the first terminal device.
