a brake rotor, a brake system including a brake rotor, and a method of boronizing a brake rotor, wherein the brake rotor includes a rotor body including a braking surface. the rotor body includes an iron alloy and the braking surface includes a layer of feb phases in the braking surface. the brake system includes the brake rotor and a brake pad engageable with the braking surface. the method includes boronizing the braking surface and forming a feb phases on the braking surface and cooling the rotor body to ambient temperature.
