VEHICLE WITH POLARIMETRIC IMAGE NORMALIZATION LOGIC - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240300517 titled 'VEHICLE WITH POLARIMETRIC IMAGE NORMALIZATION LOGIC
The system described in the patent application includes a polarimetric camera, GPS receiver, compass, and electronic control unit for a host vehicle operating on a road surface.
- The camera captures polarimetric image data of the drive scene, including the potential driving path on the road surface.
- The ECU processes the polarimetric image data, estimates the sun location using GPS and compass, and computes an ideal representation of the road surface based on the sun location.
- The ECU normalizes the polarimetric image data to ensure the road surface has a consistent representation in the drive scene.
- A control action is executed by the ECU using the normalized representation.
Potential Applications: - Autonomous driving systems - Road maintenance and inspection - Traffic management and monitoring
Problems Solved: - Ensuring accurate representation of the road surface in drive scenes - Enhancing the efficiency and safety of host vehicles on road surfaces
Benefits: - Improved navigation and path planning for vehicles - Enhanced road surface monitoring and maintenance - Increased safety and reliability in driving scenarios
Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Polarimetric Camera System for Host Vehicles This technology can be utilized in autonomous vehicles, road maintenance vehicles, and traffic management systems to enhance efficiency, safety, and accuracy in various applications.
Questions about the technology: 1. How does the system ensure accurate representation of the road surface in different lighting conditions? 2. What are the potential cost savings for companies implementing this technology in their fleet of vehicles?
Original Abstract Submitted
a system for a host vehicle operating on a road surface includes a polarimetric camera, a global positioning system (âgpsâ) receiver, a compass, and an electronic control unit (âecuâ). the camera collects polarimetric image data of a drive scene, including a potential driving path on the road surface. the ecu receives the polarimetric image data, estimates the sun location using the gps receiver and compass, and computes an ideal representation of the road surface using the sun location. the ecu normalizes the polarimetric image data such that the road surface has a normalized representation in the drive scene, i.e., an angle of linear polarization (âaolpâ) and degree of linear polarization (âdolpâ) equal predetermined fixed values. the ecu executes a control action using the normalized representation.
