Enhanced Ranging Techniques in 802.11 - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240380516 titled 'Enhanced Ranging Techniques in 802.11

The abstract of this patent application describes a method for an initiating station to communicate with a responding station regarding support for optional preamble puncture patterns, and initiating a ranging session based on this support.

  • The method involves the initiating station transmitting a first indicator to the responding station to indicate support for optional preamble puncture patterns.
  • The responding station then sends a second indicator back to the initiating station to confirm its support for these patterns.
  • If both stations support the optional preamble puncture patterns, the method includes starting a ranging session with the responding station based on these patterns.

Potential Applications: - This technology could be used in wireless communication systems to improve efficiency and reliability of data transmission. - It could be applied in IoT devices, ensuring seamless and optimized communication between devices. - Telecommunication networks could benefit from this method to enhance ranging sessions and overall network performance.

Problems Solved: - Addresses the need for efficient communication protocols in wireless systems. - Solves the challenge of coordinating ranging sessions between stations in a network. - Improves the reliability of data transmission by utilizing optional preamble puncture patterns.

Original Abstract Submitted

a method of an initiating station (ista) can include transmitting, to a responding station (rsta), a first indicator indicating whether the ista supports one or more optional preamble puncture patterns. additionally, the method can include receiving, from the rsta, a second indicator indicating whether the rsta supports optional preamble puncture patterns. furthermore and responsive to determining that the ista and the rsta support optional preamble puncture patterns, the method can further include starting, according to at least one of the optional preamble puncture patterns, a ranging session with the rsta.
