Abstract: a rewards system for players of gaming machines includes a rewards server. the gaming machines are configured to prompt players to provide a mobile identifier (phone number) for their mobile communication device relative to a game play session at one of the gaming machines. the rewards server tracks the player's game play activities in association with their mobile identifier and may award one or more prizes, such as indicated to a player via a message sent to their mobile communication device using the provided mobile identifier.
