Abstract: there is herein disclosed an apparatus for performing quantum key distribution, the apparatus comprising a plurality of connected functional components which, in use, co-operate to perform quantum key distribution, wherein one or more of the plurality of functional components are functionally disconnectable from, and re-connectable to, the remainder of the plurality of functional components.
