Abstract: a touch panel display device includes: a first substrate having a switching element and a pixel electrode; a second substrate having a conductive layer; a display layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate; and a switch wire switchable between: a first state in which the conductive layer functions as a sensor electrode that detects variations in capacitance because of a touch input; and a second state in which the conductive layer functions as a counter electrode that generates a display drive voltage between the conductive layer and a pixel electrode.
