Abstract: provided herein are devices comprising: a bottom plate comprising one or more electrodes configured for performing droplet operations in a droplet operations gap formed between the bottom plate and a top plate, the top plate having a top surface comprising one or more irregularities or protrusions such the top surface is non-planar; and a cover plate configured to be disposed over the top plate, the cover plate comprising one or more alignment features for positioning the cover plate with respect to the one or more irregularities or protrusions of the top surface of the top plate.
