Abstract: a filter element for an air filter has a filter medium surrounding a longitudinal axis of the filter element and an open end disc arranged at a first end of the filter medium. a seal protrudes axially away from the open end disc. the seal has a radially inwardly positioned seal surface provided with at least one local radial recess or projection at the seal surface. an air filter provided with the filter element has an openable filter housing with a housing pot and a housing cover. the housing cover has a seal collar for seal-tightly contacting the seal surface of the seal with at least one radial bulge or depression. the at least one radial bulge corresponds to the at least one local radial recess. the at least one radial depression corresponds to the at least one local radial projection.
