Abstract: a method is provided for treating a plaque-based arterial occlusion in a carotid artery of a subject. the method includes performing a carotid endarterectomy on the subject; determining the levels in the subject of a plurality of biomarkers b∈[b, . . . , b], wherein n ≥; and performing light therapy on the subject if any of the plurality of biomarkers bhas a level xin excess of a corresponding threshold value t.
