The present disclosure provides a method for manufacturing an optical element having a fine structured surface on which a fine structure is formed, by use of a mold having a fine structure forming surface, includes: forming the optical element by filling the mold with a curable composition, and curing the curable composition; and releasing the optical element from the fine structure forming surface, wherein the fine structure forming surface includes a fine structure forming region and a mold release region; the mold release region is provided on at least a part of an outer edge of the fine structure forming surface; and a surface roughness of the mold release region is smaller than a surface roughness of the fine structure forming region.
