A composition is described comprising an epoxy resin and a dicyandiamide salt comprising an anion selected from sulfonate or phosphonate. In typical embodiments, the dicyandiamide cation has the formula: wherein one or more of R1, R2, R3, and R4 are hydrogen. Also described is a method of bonding, an adhesive bonded article, and a method of synthesizing a dicyandiamide salt.
