A method for controls a fuel cell system comprising one or more fuel cells and a cooling system. The method predicts a future power request for power delivery from the fuel cell system during a future prediction horizon, detects that the predicted future power request fulfils a predetermined coolant temperature reduction condition, wherein the predicted power request must be lower than a predetermined first lower power limit at one or more instant time intervals during the future prediction horizon for the coolant temperature reduction condition to be considered fulfilled, determines at least one future time interval within the future prediction horizon during which the coolant temperature is to be adjusted to a predeterminable reduced coolant temperature, controls the coolant temperature to the reduced coolant temperature during the determined at least one future time interval.
