There is inter alia disclosed an apparatus for spatial audio encoding configured to: determine an error of fit measure () between a plurality of spatial direction component values () from a plurality of audio frames and a curve fitted () to a data set comprising the plurality of spatial direction component values; compare the error of fit measure to a threshold value; and depending on the comparison, either use a method of non-prediction for generating at least one spatial direction component value for each remaining audio frame of the interval of audio frames, or use a method of prediction for generating the at least one spatial direction component () value for each remaining audio frame of the interval of audio frames.
