Head-Mounted Display Systems With Gaze Tracker Alignment Monitoring - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18604849 titled 'Head-Mounted Display Systems With Gaze Tracker Alignment Monitoring

The patent application describes a head-mounted device with displays that provide images, using waveguides to convey the images to eye boxes. The waveguides overlap transparent lenses in a glasses frame, allowing real-world objects to be viewed. Infrared-light reflectors overlap the lenses, reflecting infrared light to illuminate a user's eyes for gaze tracking. Cameras capture gaze tracking images to track the user's gaze and calibrate components like the cameras.

  • Head-mounted device with displays and waveguides
  • Transparent lenses in glasses frame for viewing real-world objects
  • Infrared-light reflectors for gaze tracking
  • Cameras capture gaze tracking images
  • Calibration of components like cameras

Potential Applications: - Augmented reality systems - Virtual reality applications - Eye tracking technology - Medical devices for vision testing - Gaming and entertainment systems

Problems Solved: - Enhanced user experience in augmented reality - Accurate gaze tracking for various applications - Calibration of components for optimal performance

Questions about Gaze Tracking Technology: 1. How does the use of waveguides improve the display quality in head-mounted devices?

  - Waveguides help convey images directly to the eye boxes, enhancing the viewing experience.

2. What are the potential privacy concerns related to gaze tracking technology?

  - Privacy concerns may arise regarding the collection and storage of gaze tracking data.

Original Abstract Submitted

A head-mounted device may have displays that provide images. Waveguides may be used in conveying the images to eye boxes. The waveguides may overlap lenses in a glasses frame or other head-mounted support structure. The waveguides and lenses may be transparent. This allows real-world objects to be viewed from the eye boxes. Infrared-light reflectors may overlap the lenses. Gaze tracking system light sources may supply infrared light that reflects from the infrared-light reflectors to the eye boxes to illuminate a user's eyes. Gaze tracking system cameras capture gaze tracking images of the eyes from the eye boxes to track the user's gaze. Fiducials associated with the infrared-light reflectors may be monitored using the gaze tracking system cameras. This allows components such as the gaze tracking system cameras to be calibrated.
