POLARIZING PLATE AND OPTICAL DISPLAY APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18587148 titled 'POLARIZING PLATE AND OPTICAL DISPLAY APPARATUS

The abstract describes a polarizing plate for an optical display apparatus, consisting of a polarizer and a stack of retardation layers on the polarizer's surface. The stack includes a second retardation layer and a first retardation layer, with the second layer being a non-liquid crystal layer. The retardation layers have an out-of-plane retardation of -40 nm or more to less than 0 nm at a wavelength of 550 nm, satisfying Relation 1.

  • The polarizing plate includes a stack of retardation layers with specific characteristics to enhance optical performance.
  • The second retardation layer is a non-liquid crystal layer, contributing to the plate's functionality.
  • The retardation layers have a precise out-of-plane retardation at a specific wavelength, ensuring optimal performance.
  • The design of the polarizing plate aims to improve the quality of images displayed on optical devices.
  • Relation 1 defines the relationship between the retardation values of the layers at a specific wavelength.

Potential Applications: - Optical display devices such as LCD screens - Virtual reality headsets - Camera lenses

Problems Solved: - Enhanced image quality - Reduced glare and reflection - Improved color accuracy

Benefits: - Crisp and clear display - Better viewing experience - Reduced eye strain

Commercial Applications: The technology can be utilized in various commercial products such as smartphones, tablets, monitors, and other display devices. The improved optical performance can attract consumers looking for high-quality displays.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the specific out-of-plane retardation of the layers contribute to the overall performance of the polarizing plate? 2. What sets the non-liquid crystal second retardation layer apart from traditional liquid crystal layers in similar applications?

Original Abstract Submitted

A polarizing plate and an optical display apparatus are disclosed. A polarizing plate includes a polarizer and a stack of retardation layers on a surface of the polarizer, and the stack of retardation layers includes a second retardation layer and a first retardation layer stacked on the polarizer in sequence from the surface of the polarizer, the second retardation layer being a non-liquid crystal layer, and the stack of retardation layers has an out-of-plane retardation of −40 nm or more to less than 0 nm at a wavelength of 550 nm and satisfies Relation 1.
