Gas Separation Membranes - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18284147 titled 'Gas Separation Membranes
Simplified Explanation
The gas separation membrane described in the abstract consists of multiple layers, including a porous support layer, a discriminating layer with specific chemical groups, a fluorinated polymer layer, and optionally a protective layer. The discriminating layer contains metal or metalloid atoms and oxygen atoms in specific configurations.
- The gas separation membrane includes a porous support layer with low levels of monovalent metal ions.
- The discriminating layer contains groups with a specific chemical formula, including metal or metalloid atoms and oxygen atoms.
- The optional fluorinated polymer layer may be included in the membrane structure.
- The optional protective layer provides additional durability and protection to the membrane.
Potential Applications
The gas separation membrane could be used in various industrial processes such as gas purification, natural gas processing, and air separation.
Problems Solved
This technology helps in separating gases efficiently, improving the purity of gases, and increasing the overall efficiency of gas separation processes.
Benefits

Original Abstract Submitted
A gas separation membrane comprising the following layers: (i) a porous support layer; and (ii) a discriminating layer comprising groups of the Formula (1): M—(O—), wherein: M is a metal or metalloid atom; O is an oxygen atom; and x has a value of at least 4; optionally (iii) a layer which comprises a fluorinated polymer; and optionally (iv) optionally a protective layer; wherein: (a) the porous support layer (i) comprises less than 10 mg/mof monovalent metal ions; (b) the discriminating layer (ii) comprises a surface comprising at least 10 atomic % of M of Formula (1) groups, wherein M is as hereinbefore defined; and (c) when layer (iii) is present, layer (ii) is located between layers (i) and (iii).
