FUEL SYSTEM FOR A VEHICLE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18158206 titled 'FUEL SYSTEM FOR A VEHICLE

The patent application describes a method for controlling a fuel vapor recovery system with multiple canisters and control valves.

  • The method includes conducting a leak test to determine if the system is leaking.
  • If the pressure of the system increases to less than a threshold value from a target vacuum pressure within a set time period during the leak test, a signal is generated indicating no leaks.
  • Conversely, if the pressure rises above the threshold value from the target vacuum pressure within the same time period, a signal is outputted indicating a leak in the system.

Potential Applications: - Automotive industry for controlling fuel vapor emissions. - Environmental protection to prevent fuel leaks and vapor emissions. - Industrial applications where fuel vapor recovery systems are used.

Problems Solved: - Efficiently detecting leaks in fuel vapor recovery systems. - Ensuring proper functioning of the system to prevent environmental harm. - Improving overall system performance and reliability.

Benefits: - Early detection of leaks for prompt repairs. - Reduced environmental impact from fuel vapor emissions. - Enhanced safety and compliance with regulations.

Commercial Applications: - Automotive manufacturers. - Gas stations and fuel storage facilities. - Environmental monitoring companies.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does this method compare to traditional leak detection systems? 2. What are the potential cost savings associated with early leak detection in fuel vapor recovery systems?

Frequently Updated Research: - Ongoing studies on improving leak detection sensitivity in fuel vapor recovery systems. - Research on integrating advanced sensors for real-time monitoring of system pressure changes.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method for controlling a fuel vapor recovery system having first, second, and third canisters and a plurality of control valves includes (i) performing a leak test; (ii) in response to the pressure of the entirety of the fuel vapor recovery system increasing to less than a threshold value from a target vacuum pressure within a predetermined period after obtaining the target vacuum pressure during the leak test, outputting a signal indicating that the fuel vapor recovery system is not leaking; and (iii) in response to the pressure of the entirety of the fuel vapor recovery system increasing to greater than the threshold value from the target vacuum pressure within the predetermined period after obtaining the target vacuum pressure during the leak test, outputting a signal indicating that the fuel vapor recovery system is leaking.
