Gradual Decoding Refresh In Video Coding - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18156943 titled 'Gradual Decoding Refresh In Video Coding

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for decoding a coded video bitstream using a video decoder. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method involves decoding a coded video sequence (CVS) that contains a video coding layer (VCL) network abstraction layer (NAL) unit with a gradual decoding refresh (GDR) network abstraction layer (NAL) unit type (GDR_NUT).
  • The VCL NAL unit with GDR_NUT contains a GDR picture, which is a specific type of picture in the video sequence.
  • The decoding process starts at the GDR picture and proceeds to decode the rest of the CVS.
  • Once the decoding is complete, an image is generated based on the decoded CVS.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Video streaming platforms: This method can be used in video decoders of streaming platforms to efficiently decode and display video content.
  • Video conferencing systems: The method can enhance the decoding process in video conferencing systems, resulting in improved video quality and reduced latency.
  • Video surveillance: Surveillance systems that rely on video decoding can benefit from this method to decode and analyze video footage more effectively.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Efficient decoding: The method allows for more efficient decoding of video bitstreams by starting the decoding process at a specific type of picture, reducing the overall decoding time.
  • Improved video quality: By decoding the CVS in a specific order, the method can enhance the video quality by prioritizing important frames.
  • Reduced latency: Initiating decoding at the GDR picture can help reduce the latency in video streaming and conferencing applications.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Faster decoding: By starting the decoding process at the GDR picture, the method can speed up the overall decoding time, resulting in faster video playback.
  • Enhanced video quality: The method prioritizes important frames, leading to improved video quality with sharper details and reduced artifacts.
  • Lower latency: By reducing the decoding time, the method helps in achieving lower latency in video streaming and conferencing applications, resulting in a smoother user experience.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of decoding a coded video bitstream implemented by a video decoder is disclosed. The method includes determining that a coded video sequence (CVS) of the coded video bitstream includes a video coding layer (VCL) network abstraction layer (NAL) unit having a gradual decoding refresh (GDR) network abstraction layer (NAL) unit type (GDR_NUT), the VCL NAL unit having the GDR_NUT containing a GDR picture; initiating decoding of the CVS at the GDR picture; and generating an image according to the CVS as decoded. A corresponding method of encoding is also disclosed.
