ILLUMINATION REDISTRIBUTOR FOR DISPLAY PANEL - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18120744 titled 'ILLUMINATION REDISTRIBUTOR FOR DISPLAY PANEL
Simplified Explanation
The patent application describes a method to reduce the narrowing of an eyebox in a display caused by uniform illumination, by using a redistributor that provides a spatially variant angular distribution of brightness matched to the performance of the ocular lens.
- The redistributor converts the spatially uniform angular distribution of brightness of light illuminating the display panel into a spatially non-uniform angular distribution of brightness, lessening the dependence of the beam coordinate at the image plane upon the pixel coordinate at the object plane.
Potential Applications
This technology could be applied in:
- Virtual reality headsets
- Heads-up displays in vehicles
- Medical imaging devices
Problems Solved
- Narrowing of eyebox in displays
- Uniform illumination causing issues with ocular lenses
Benefits
- Improved viewing experience
- Enhanced image quality
- Reduced eye strain
Potential Commercial Applications
Optimizing display technology for:
- Consumer electronics
- Automotive industry
- Healthcare sector
Possible Prior Art
One possible prior art could be the use of lens arrays in display systems to control the distribution of light for improved viewing angles.
Unanswered Questions
How does the redistributor specifically match the angular distribution of brightness to the performance of the ocular lens?
The patent application does not provide detailed information on the specific mechanisms or algorithms used to match the angular distribution of brightness to the ocular lens performance.
Are there any limitations or drawbacks to using the redistributor in display systems?
The patent application does not address any potential limitations or drawbacks that may arise from implementing the redistributor technology in display systems.
Original Abstract Submitted
Narrowing of an eyebox in a display including a display panel and an ocular lens caused by uniform illumination of the display panel may be reduced by using a redistributor that provides a spatially variant angular distribution of brightness matched to performance of the ocular lens. When a beam of light from a pixel of the display panel has a first dependence of a beam coordinate at the image plane upon a pixel coordinate at the object plane when the display panel is illuminated with light having a spatially uniform angular distribution of brightness, the redistributor may be configured to convert the spatially uniform angular distribution of brightness of light illuminating the display panel into a spatially non-uniform angular distribution of brightness for lessening the first dependence.
