AGGREGATED COMMON PACKAGE OTA BROADCAST - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18048683 titled 'AGGREGATED COMMON PACKAGE OTA BROADCAST

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a system for delivering software updates to vehicles using an Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) transmitter and a cellular network.

  • The update server broadcasts a probe message to vehicles and receives probe results in response.
  • Based on the probe results, the server determines software updates to send to the vehicles.
  • An aggregate common package is generated with common software updates for a subset of vehicles.
  • The aggregate common package is sent to vehicles via the ATSC transmitter, while any remaining updates are sent over the cellular network.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Utilizes an ATSC transmitter and cellular network for software updates.
  • Analyzes probe results to determine specific updates for vehicles.
  • Creates an aggregate common package for efficient update delivery.
  • Ensures all vehicles receive necessary software updates.

Potential Applications:

  • Automotive industry for updating vehicle software remotely.
  • Fleet management companies for maintaining software across a large number of vehicles.
  • Smart city initiatives for updating public transportation systems.

Problems Solved:

  • Efficient and effective delivery of software updates to vehicles.
  • Ensuring all vehicles receive necessary updates in a timely manner.
  • Reducing the complexity of managing software updates for a large number of vehicles.

Benefits:

  • Improved vehicle performance and security through timely updates.
  • Cost-effective solution for managing software updates across a fleet of vehicles.
  • Enhanced user experience with up-to-date software features.

Commercial Applications: The technology could be used in the automotive industry for remote software updates, fleet management companies for efficient maintenance, and smart city initiatives for updating public transportation systems.

Questions about Software Update Delivery: 1. How does the system prioritize which vehicles receive software updates first? 2. What security measures are in place to protect the software update process?

Original Abstract Submitted

Delivering software updates is provided. An update server in communication with an Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) transmitter and with a cellular network broadcasts a probe message to a plurality of vehicles. The update server receives probe results from the plurality of vehicles, responsive to the broadcasting. The update server analyzes the probe results to determine software updates to send to the plurality of vehicles. The update server generates an aggregate common package including the software updates in common with at least a subset of the plurality of vehicles. The update server, sends using the ATSC transmitter, the aggregate common package to the plurality of vehicles. The update server sends, over the cellular network, any remaining portion of the software updates not included in the aggregate common package to the plurality of vehicles.
