MANAGING DATA COMPACTION FOR ZONES IN MEMORY DEVICES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17899092 titled 'MANAGING DATA COMPACTION FOR ZONES IN MEMORY DEVICES

Simplified Explanation

    • Explanation:**

The patent application describes a system and method for managing data compaction in zones in memory devices. It involves identifying specific zones in memory, monitoring data storage capacity in these zones, and transferring data to different memory units when a capacity threshold is reached.

  • The method involves receiving a write command for a zoned namespace (ZNS) zone.
  • It selects a subset of memory pages associated with the ZNS zone.
  • It accesses a capacity counter reflecting the amount of data stored in the ZNS zone.
  • When the capacity counter meets a threshold criterion, data is copied to a different subset of memory pages in another management unit.
    • Potential Applications:**
  • Data storage management in memory devices
  • Optimization of memory usage in zoned namespaces
    • Problems Solved:**
  • Efficient data compaction in memory zones
  • Preventing data loss due to exceeding capacity limits in specific zones
    • Benefits:**
  • Improved memory utilization
  • Enhanced data management capabilities
  • Reduced risk of data loss or corruption due to capacity constraints

Original Abstract Submitted

A system and method for managing data compaction in zones in memory devices. An example method includes receiving, by a processor of a memory device, receiving, by a processing device, a write command; identifying a zoned namespace (ZNS) zone specified with the write command; selecting a first subset of memory pages of a first management unit that is configured to store a first number of bits per memory cell, wherein the first management unit is associated with the ZNS zone; accessing a capacity counter associated with the ZNS zone that reflects an amount of data currently stored to the ZNS zone; and responsive to determining that the capacity counter satisfies a threshold criterion, causing the memory device to copy the data associated with the ZNS zone from the first subset of memory pages to a second subset of memory pages of a second management unit of the memory device.
