GAIT ASSESSMENT SYSTEMS AND METHODS USING ACOUSTIC DATA - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240268354 titled 'GAIT ASSESSMENT SYSTEMS AND METHODS USING ACOUSTIC DATA

The patent application describes a system and method for identifying a gait characteristic of an animal from an audio signal, specifically focusing on footfalls.

  • The system compares acoustic attributes of each footfall to automatically identify abnormal gait characteristics.
  • Abnormalities such as one foot landing softer than the other can indicate potential issues with the animal's foot or leg.
  • This technology can be applied to various animals, including mammals, to monitor their gait and detect any abnormalities.
  • By analyzing the audio signal, the system can provide valuable insights into the animal's health and well-being.
  • The innovation offers a non-invasive and efficient way to assess an animal's gait characteristics using audio signals.

Potential Applications: - Veterinary medicine for diagnosing gait abnormalities in animals - Wildlife conservation to monitor the health of endangered species - Livestock management to ensure the well-being of farm animals

Problems Solved: - Early detection of gait abnormalities in animals - Non-invasive monitoring of animal health - Efficient assessment of an animal's gait characteristics

Benefits: - Improved animal welfare through early detection of health issues - Enhanced monitoring capabilities for veterinarians and researchers - Non-invasive and cost-effective method for assessing animal gait

Commercial Applications: Title: "Animal Gait Analysis System: Commercial Uses and Market Implications" This technology can be utilized in veterinary clinics, wildlife research centers, and livestock farms to improve animal health monitoring and management practices. The market for such systems is expected to grow as the demand for non-invasive animal health monitoring solutions increases.

Questions about Animal Gait Analysis: 1. How does this technology compare to traditional methods of assessing animal gait?

  - This technology offers a non-invasive and automated approach to analyzing gait characteristics, providing real-time insights into an animal's health.

2. What are the potential limitations of using audio signals to identify gait characteristics in animals?

  - The accuracy of the system may be affected by environmental noise and variations in audio quality, which could impact the reliability of the results.

Original Abstract Submitted

disclosed herein is a system and method for identifying a gait characteristic of a mammal or other form of animal from an audio signal. the audio signal includes audio portions corresponding to footfalls of the animal. by comparing, for example, the acoustic attributes (e.g., decibel level) of each footfalls, the system may automatically identify abnormal gait characteristics such as one foot landing softer relative to another indicating some possible problem with the foot or leg of the softer landing foot.
