WELDING METHOD AND WELDING APPARATUS FOR SECONDARY BATTERY, AND MONITORING METHOD AND MONITORING APPARATUS FOR SECONDARY BATTERY WELDING PROCESS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18024736 titled 'WELDING METHOD AND WELDING APPARATUS FOR SECONDARY BATTERY, AND MONITORING METHOD AND MONITORING APPARATUS FOR SECONDARY BATTERY WELDING PROCESS

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a welding apparatus for a secondary battery with an electrode assembly and a lower can.

  • The welding apparatus includes a jig with an insertion portion and a seating portion.
  • The insertion portion is shaped like a pipe and can fit into the center hole of the electrode assembly.
  • The seating portion is a disk-shaped end of the insertion portion.
  • The apparatus also includes a laser irradiation apparatus that emits a laser beam into the hole of the insertion portion.
  • When the electrode assembly is placed on the lower can, the laser irradiation apparatus welds the inner bottom surface of the can to the electrode tab.
  • The welding is performed after the laser beam passes through the hole of the insertion portion of the jig.

Original Abstract Submitted

A welding apparatus is provided for a secondary battery having an electrode assembly with a center hole seated on a lower can. The welding apparatus includes a jig which includes an insertion portion that has a pipe shape and a diameter enabling entry into the center hole of the electrode assembly and a seating portion that has an enlarged diameter of a disk shape on an end of the insertion portion; and a laser irradiation apparatus to emit a laser beam into a hole of the insertion portion. When the electrode assembly is seated on the lower can such that an electrode tab of the electrode assembly is placed within the center hole, the laser irradiation apparatus performs a weld between the inner bottom surface of the lower can and the electrode tab after passing through the hole of the insertion portion of the jig.
