VEHICLE ACCESS STEP STRUCTURE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240286552 titled 'VEHICLE ACCESS STEP STRUCTURE

The vehicle access step structure described in the patent application includes an energy absorption portion, a step portion, and an anti-slip portion.

  • The energy absorption portion is positioned below the side sill of the vehicle and deforms upon the application of an external force, exhibiting an energy absorption function.
  • The step portion is located lower and towards the outer side of the vehicle width direction than the side sill, deforming along with the energy absorption portion to absorb energy.
  • An anti-slip portion is provided on the upper surface of the step portion to enhance safety and prevent slipping.
  • The structure is designed to improve safety and stability when entering or exiting the vehicle.

Potential Applications: This technology can be applied to various types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs, to enhance safety and convenience for passengers.

Problems Solved: The structure addresses the issue of potential accidents or injuries that may occur when stepping in or out of a vehicle, especially in slippery conditions.

Benefits: Improved safety for passengers, reduced risk of slipping or falling, enhanced stability during vehicle entry and exit.

Commercial Applications: This technology can be utilized by automotive manufacturers to enhance the safety features of their vehicles, potentially increasing consumer interest and satisfaction.

Questions about the Vehicle Access Step Structure: 1. How does the energy absorption portion work to enhance safety in the vehicle access step structure? The energy absorption portion deforms upon the application of an external force, absorbing energy and reducing the impact on the vehicle and passengers.

2. What is the significance of the anti-slip portion in the overall design of the vehicle access step structure? The anti-slip portion helps prevent accidents by providing a secure surface for passengers to step on, reducing the risk of slipping or falling.

Original Abstract Submitted

a vehicle access step structure includes: an energy absorption portion having an inner end, in a vehicle width direction, which is positioned below a side sill of a vehicle and which faces an outer end face, in the vehicle width direction, of a battery configured to supply electric power to an electric motor that is a drive source of the vehicle, the energy absorption portion exhibiting an energy absorption function by deforming upon application of an external force of a predetermined size or greater; a step portion positioned lower, and further toward an outer side, in the vehicle width direction, than the side sill, the step portion deforming upon application of the external force and exhibiting an energy absorption function together with the energy absorption portion; and an anti-slip portion provided at an upper surface of the step portion.
