VIDEO ENCODING AND DECODING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240323372 titled 'VIDEO ENCODING AND DECODING

The abstract describes a patent application for a decoder that can decode a picture from a bitstream where the picture is divided into multiple tile groups. The decoder decodes the bitstream in two parts, first decoding parameter set data to create a size mapping for the tile groups, and then decoding the coded tile groups based on the size mapping.

  • Decoder configured to decode pictures from bitstreams with partitioned tile groups
  • Decoding first part of bitstream to create size mapping for tile groups
  • Decoding second part of bitstream to decode coded tile groups based on size mapping
  • Determining tile group size from tile group index value and size mapping
  • Decoding number of coded tiles to form the decoded picture

Potential Applications: - Video decoding technology - Image processing applications - Multimedia streaming services

Problems Solved: - Efficient decoding of pictures from partitioned tile groups - Improved data compression and transmission in multimedia applications

Benefits: - Enhanced picture quality - Reduced bandwidth usage - Faster decoding process

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Video Decoding Technology for Multimedia Applications Description: This technology can be used in video streaming services, video conferencing platforms, and digital media players to enhance picture quality and optimize bandwidth usage.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does this decoder improve the efficiency of decoding pictures from partitioned tile groups? 2. What are the potential applications of this technology in the multimedia industry?

Original Abstract Submitted

a decoder can be configured to decode a picture from a bitstream in which the picture is partitioned into a plurality of tile groups. the decoder can decode a first part of the bitstream (including parameter set data) to form a size mapping that maps a tile group index value to a number of tiles to be decoded for a first tile group. the decoder can further decode a second part of the bitstream (including includes coded tile groups) by: decoding, from a tile group header in a first coded tile group, a first tile group index value for the first tile group; determining a first size for the first tile group based on the first tile group index value and the size mapping; and decoding a number of coded tiles to form the decoded picture, the number of coded tiles being equal to the first size.
