SCALING A 3D VOLUME IN EXTENDED REALITY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240193882 titled 'SCALING A 3D VOLUME IN EXTENDED REALITY

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a method for scaling virtual objects in an extended reality (XR) system by using hand gestures.

  • The XR system presents a virtual object to the user in the XR user interface.
  • The system detects a pinch hand pose made by the user to determine the pinch location.
  • Based on the pinch location and the center point of the virtual object, the system scales the virtual object.
  • The scaled virtual object is then displayed back to the user in the XR user interface.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Utilizes hand gestures to scale virtual objects in an XR system.
  • Enhances user interaction with virtual objects in XR environments.
  • Improves user experience by providing intuitive control over object scaling.

Potential Applications:

  • Virtual reality gaming
  • Architectural design and visualization
  • Medical simulations and training
  • Educational applications

Problems Solved:

  • Enhances user control and interaction in XR environments.
  • Simplifies the process of scaling virtual objects.
  • Improves the overall user experience in XR applications.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced user engagement and immersion.
  • Improved usability and control in XR interfaces.
  • Streamlined interaction with virtual objects.

Commercial Applications: The technology can be applied in various industries such as gaming, architecture, healthcare, and education to enhance user experiences and improve interaction with virtual content.

Prior Art: Prior art related to this technology may include research on gesture-based interactions in virtual reality systems and methods for scaling virtual objects in XR environments.

Frequently Updated Research: Researchers are constantly exploring new ways to improve user interactions in XR systems, including advancements in gesture recognition and object manipulation techniques.

Questions about XR: 1. How does this technology impact the user experience in XR applications? 2. What are the potential limitations of using hand gestures for scaling virtual objects in XR systems?

Original Abstract Submitted

an extended reality (xr) system provides methodologies for scaling a virtual object in an xr user interface of the xr system. the methodologies include providing to a user an xr user interface of an xr system, where the xr user interface includes a virtual object displayed to the user. the xr system determines a pinch location of a pinch hand pose being made by the user and scales the virtual object based on the pinch location and a virtual object center point of the virtual object. the xr system redisplays the scaled virtual object to the user in the xr user interface.
