a system having processors and computer-readable memory storing instructions to be executed by processors, cause the processors to perform operations including: hosting a virtual event for client devices, each having an associated user attending the virtual event; the virtual event allows users to begin/end interactions with client device guis, which provide users with real-time audio-visual communications with other users; maintaining user metadata having data fields each storing information related to the user; maintaining interaction data for the event to record interactions between the users; maintaining a ruleset of interaction rules, each specifying users and/or interaction types; applying the user metadata and the interaction data to interaction rules to determine if the specified interaction types have occurred in the virtual event; and modifying a client device gui responsive to, and based on the, determining if the specified interaction types have occurred in the virtual event.
