DISPLAY DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240274060 titled 'DISPLAY DEVICE

The patent application describes a display device with a panel driver that can adjust the refresh rate of the display panel.

  • The panel driver includes a comparator that compares the previous refresh rate with the target refresh rate.
  • A determiner calculates the number of compensation frames needed to transition between different refresh rates.
  • The final count of compensation frames is determined based on the difference value between the previous and target refresh rates.

Potential Applications: - This technology can be used in various display devices such as TVs, monitors, and smartphones. - It can improve the overall viewing experience by optimizing the refresh rate based on the content being displayed.

Problems Solved: - Ensures smooth transitions between different refresh rates without causing visual disruptions. - Helps in reducing motion blur and improving overall display quality.

Benefits: - Enhanced visual experience with optimized refresh rates. - Seamless transitions between different frame rates for a more enjoyable viewing experience.

Commercial Applications: - This technology can be implemented in consumer electronics, gaming monitors, and digital signage for improved display performance.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the panel driver determine the number of compensation frames needed for refresh rate transitions? 2. What are the potential drawbacks of adjusting the refresh rate in real-time on a display device?

Original Abstract Submitted

a display device includes: a display panel including a plurality of pixels; and a panel driver that drives the display panel at a target refresh rate different from a previous refresh rate. the panel driver includes: a comparator which compares a difference value between the previous refresh rate and the target refresh rate with a reference value generated by multiplying the previous refresh rate by a predetermined reference percentage; and a determiner which determines a final count of at least one compensation frame to be inserted between a previous driving frame operating at the previous refresh rate and a target driving frame operating at the target refresh rate when the difference value is not less than the reference value, where the final count is a total number of the at least one compensation frame, and a natural number.
