methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. a network entity may configure a mapping between a set of power states and a set of codepoints. the network entity may indicate the mapping to a user equipment (ue) via control signaling, such as a first control message. each power state may correspond to a respective directional communication profile associated with the network entity, the ue, or both. the network entity may transmit a second control message to the ue to indicate a codepoint from the set of codepoints. the ue device may transition to a power state that corresponds to the codepoint (e.g., based on the mapping) in accordance with the second control message. in some examples, the network entity may indicate the codepoint in a field of the second control message associated with a search space set group (sssg) switching indication.
