ADAPTIVE MANUFACTURING USING AN ADAPTIVE MANUFACTURING TOOLPATH - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240269750 titled 'ADAPTIVE MANUFACTURING USING AN ADAPTIVE MANUFACTURING TOOLPATH

The abstract describes a method of manufacturing a component using additive manufacturing and machining processes.

  • Powder is deposited using an additive manufacturing device to create a first object.
  • The powder is melted by the additive manufacturing device.
  • Predicted characteristics of the first object are determined based on additive manufacturing data.
  • The predicted characteristics are compared to reference data to generate machining data.
  • The first object is machined using the machining data.

Potential Applications: - This method can be used in various industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical for producing complex components with high precision.

Problems Solved: - This method streamlines the manufacturing process by combining additive manufacturing and machining, reducing time and costs associated with traditional manufacturing methods.

Benefits: - Improved efficiency in component manufacturing. - Enhanced precision and accuracy in the production of complex parts. - Cost savings due to optimized manufacturing processes.

Commercial Applications: - This technology can be utilized by manufacturers looking to enhance their production processes and create high-quality components with intricate designs.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does this method compare to traditional manufacturing processes in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness? 2. What are the specific industries that can benefit the most from this combined additive manufacturing and machining approach?

Original Abstract Submitted

a method of manufacturing a component includes a) depositing powder using an additive manufacturing device based upon additive manufacturing data to provide a first object, the additive manufacturing device melting the powder, b) determining predicted characteristics of the first object based upon the additive manufacturing data developed in step a), c) comparing the predicted characteristics of the first object to the reference data to provide machining data and d) machining the first object using the machining data. a system for manufacturing a component is also disclosed.
