disclosed are exercise equipment and a method for controlling the exercise equipment including a main body forming an external shape of the equipment, an extendable/retractable wire that is disposed inside the main body and exposed to the outside of the main body, a load generator that provides a set load when the wire is extended/retracted, a power supply that supplies power to the load generator, and a controller that controls the power supply and the load generator. the method includes an exercise load setting of setting the set load by determining the retraction of the wire while increasing a load generated by the load generator as the wire is extended, an exercise start determining of determining start of exercise based on the extension of the wire, an exercise load varying of reducing or increasing the load generated by the load generator based on a change in a length of the wire, and an exercise end determining of determining whether the exercise is in progress and whether the exercise is ended by sensing the length and the retracted state of the wire.
