SPEAKER AWARENESS USING SPEAKER DEPENDENT SPEECH MODEL(S) - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240203400 titled 'SPEAKER AWARENESS USING SPEAKER DEPENDENT SPEECH MODEL(S)

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes an automated assistant that can bypass the need for an invocation phrase when the distance between devices meets a certain threshold. This is achieved by estimating the distance between devices, such as a computerized watch and a cellular phone, using ultrasonic signals.

  • Automated assistant can bypass invocation phrase detection based on device-to-device distance.
  • Estimation of distance between devices like a computerized watch and a cellular phone using ultrasonic signals.
  • When estimated distance meets threshold, assistant operates as if user is holding both devices.
  • Indicates user's intention to interact with assistant, allowing for bypass of invocation phrase detection.

Potential Applications: 1. Hands-free interaction with automated assistants. 2. Enhanced user experience in smart device communication. 3. Improved accessibility for users with mobility issues.

Problems Solved: 1. Eliminates the need for manual invocation of assistant. 2. Enhances user convenience and efficiency in device interaction. 3. Reduces barriers to accessing smart device features.

Benefits: 1. Streamlined user experience. 2. Increased accessibility for all users. 3. Improved efficiency in device interactions.

Commercial Applications: The technology can be utilized in smart devices, wearables, and IoT devices to enhance user experience and streamline interactions. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize how users engage with their devices and automated assistants.

Questions about the Technology: 1. How does the automated assistant determine the distance between devices? 2. What are the potential privacy implications of this technology?

Frequently Updated Research: Ongoing research in ultrasonic communication and proximity detection technologies may further enhance the capabilities and applications of this automated assistant system.

Original Abstract Submitted

implementations relate to an automated assistant that can bypass invocation phrase detection when an estimation of device-to-device distance satisfies a distance threshold. the estimation of distance can be performed for a set of devices, such as a computerized watch and a cellular phone, and/or any other combination of devices. the devices can communicate ultrasonic signals between each other, and the estimated distance can be determined based on when the ultrasonic signals are sent and/or received by each respective device. when an estimated distance satisfies the distance threshold, the automated assistant can operate as if the user is holding onto their cellular phone while wearing their computerized watch. this scenario can indicate that the user may be intending to hold their device to interact with the automated assistant and, based on this indication, the automated assistant can temporarily bypass invocation phrase detection (e.g., invoke the automated assistant).
