Providing Navigational Instructions Based On Contextual Data - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240183671 titled 'Providing Navigational Instructions Based On Contextual Data

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a computing system and method for a mapping system that recommends navigational routes based on paths taken by secondary users in the past.

  • The system can recommend routes based on routes taken by other users who are connected through social media or address books.
  • Users can make specific routes "sticky" based on contextual data, allowing the system to automatically navigate them on similar routes in the future.
      1. Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in GPS navigation systems, ride-sharing apps, and travel planning platforms.

      1. Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of providing personalized and contextually relevant navigational routes to users based on their preferences and past experiences.

      1. Benefits

The system improves user experience by offering tailored navigational recommendations, increasing efficiency and convenience in route planning.

      1. Potential Commercial Applications

This technology could be valuable for companies in the transportation, travel, and navigation industries looking to enhance their services with personalized route recommendations.

      1. Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of historical data in navigation systems to suggest routes based on past user behavior.

        1. What data sources are used to determine contextual situations for route recommendations?

The abstract mentions social media, address books, and other connected users as potential data sources for contextual information.

        1. How does the system ensure user privacy and data security when leveraging personal information for route recommendations?

The patent application should detail the measures taken to protect user data and privacy while utilizing personal information for route suggestions.

Original Abstract Submitted

a computing system and method that can be used for a mapping system that can recommend paths for navigational routing to a primary user. in particular, a primary user may be interested in navigational routes that secondary users, who may be the same or different from the primary user, have taken in the past. even more particularly, the mapping systems described herein can provide improved user navigational services by leveraging the insight that users who have previously been in a similar situation (e.g., on vacation, in icy conditions, etc.) may wish to take the same route as they did the last time. alternatively, users may desire to take routes based on routes which were taken by other users who are connected (e.g., via social media, address books, etc.). specifically, users can make particular routes “sticky” based on contextual data such that the next time a similar contextual situation arises (e.g., icy road conditions) the computing system can automatically navigate the user based on the sticky alternative route.
