SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR PERMITTING ACCESS TO A HUMAN MACHINE INTERFACE IN A VEHICLE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240241936 titled 'SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR PERMITTING ACCESS TO A HUMAN MACHINE INTERFACE IN A VEHICLE

Simplified Explanation:

This patent application describes a system for a vehicle that can determine if there is a passenger in the vehicle and allow the passenger, but not the driver, to use the human-machine interface (HMI).

  • The system includes an interior sensor suite, a processor, and a memory.
  • The processor can determine if there is a passenger in the vehicle and whether the passenger or the driver is attempting to use the HMI.
  • It then permits the passenger, and not the driver, to use the HMI.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • System for a vehicle to determine passenger presence and control HMI access.
  • Utilizes interior sensor suite, processor, and memory to make decisions.
  • Enhances safety and convenience by restricting driver access to HMI.

Potential Applications:

  • Automotive industry for vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems.
  • Transportation services for enhanced passenger experience.
  • Fleet management for monitoring driver behavior.

Problems Solved:

  • Prevents driver distraction by limiting HMI access.
  • Improves passenger interaction with vehicle systems.
  • Enhances overall safety and user experience in vehicles.

Benefits:

  • Increased safety by reducing driver distractions.
  • Enhanced passenger convenience and control.
  • Improved user experience in vehicles.

Commercial Applications:

The technology can be applied in autonomous vehicles, ride-sharing services, and fleet management systems to enhance safety and user experience while optimizing operational efficiency.

Questions about the Technology:

1. How does the system differentiate between the driver and the passenger using the HMI? 2. What are the potential privacy concerns related to the use of interior sensor data in vehicles?

Frequently Updated Research:

Stay updated on advancements in interior sensor technology, driver monitoring systems, and human-machine interface design to understand the evolving landscape of vehicle safety and user experience.

Original Abstract Submitted

a system for a vehicle configured to be driven by a driver is provided. the vehicle has a human-machine interface (hmi). the system includes an interior sensor suite, a processor electrically connected to the interior sensor suite and the hmi, and a memory. the memory has instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations including determine, based on the interior sensor suite, if there is a passenger in the vehicle, determine, when there is a passenger in the vehicle and based on the interior sensor suite, whether the passenger or the driver is attempting to use the hmi, and permit the passenger and not the driver to use the hmi.
