SYSTEM FOR A VEHICLE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240239366 titled 'SYSTEM FOR A VEHICLE

The abstract describes a system for a vehicle that uses an imaging system and a controller to identify a trailer behind the vehicle, estimate its dimensions, and determine future vehicle paths based on this information.

  • The system includes an imaging system that captures scene data of the area behind the vehicle.
  • A controller processes the scene data while the distance between the vehicle and the trailer changes.
  • The controller identifies the trailer, tracks its movement by identifying keypoints at different time points, and estimates the dimensions of the trailer based on this data.
  • Future vehicle paths are then determined based on the estimated dimensions of the trailer, allowing for safe and efficient vehicle maneuvers while the trailer is attached.

Potential Applications: - This technology can be used in advanced driver assistance systems to assist drivers in maneuvering with trailers. - It can also be applied in autonomous vehicles to improve their ability to tow trailers safely.

Problems Solved: - Helps drivers navigate with trailers more effectively and safely. - Enhances the capabilities of autonomous vehicles when towing trailers.

Benefits: - Improved safety and efficiency when maneuvering with trailers. - Enhanced driver assistance features for towing operations. - Increased convenience and confidence for drivers when towing trailers.

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Trailer Tracking System for Vehicles This technology can be utilized by automotive manufacturers to enhance their driver assistance systems for towing operations. It can also be integrated into autonomous vehicle platforms to improve their towing capabilities, catering to a wide range of consumers who require assistance when towing trailers.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does this system improve the overall safety of vehicle maneuvers with trailers? - This system enhances safety by accurately tracking the trailer's movements and estimating its dimensions, allowing for precise vehicle path planning. 2. What are the potential cost implications of integrating this technology into vehicles? - The cost implications would depend on the complexity of the system and the scale of production, but the added safety and convenience benefits could justify the investment for manufacturers and consumers alike.

Original Abstract Submitted

a system for a vehicle includes an imaging system and a controller. the imaging system outputs a signal that includes scene data of an area to a rear of the vehicle. the controller receives the scene data while a distance between the vehicle and the trailer is altered. the controller identifies a trailer within the area to the rear of the vehicle, identifies a plurality of keypoints of the trailer at a first time point—representing a first position, and identifies the plurality of keypoints of the trailer at a second time point—representing a second position. the controller estimates one or more dimensions of the trailer based on a change between the first position and the second position and determines one or more future vehicle paths based on such estimation. the one or more future vehicle paths correspond with vehicle maneuvers while the trailer is coupled to the vehicle.
