LANE-BASED VEHICLE CONTROL - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240199024 titled 'LANE-BASED VEHICLE CONTROL

Simplified Explanation:

The patent application describes a system where a host vehicle adjusts its speed in response to a lane-change initiation to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. The vehicle changes lanes based on the distances from lead and trailing vehicles in the target lane.

  • The host vehicle adjusts its speed to establish a safe distance from a lead vehicle in the target lane.
  • The vehicle changes from its current lane to a target lane based on rear and forward distance thresholds.
  • The system ensures safe lane changes by monitoring distances from surrounding vehicles.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Adaptive speed adjustment for safe lane changes.
  • Lane change based on rear and forward distance thresholds.
  • Real-time monitoring of distances from lead and trailing vehicles.

Potential Applications:

This technology can be applied in:

  • Advanced driver assistance systems.
  • Autonomous vehicles.
  • Traffic management systems.

Problems Solved:

  • Ensures safe lane changes.
  • Prevents collisions during lane changes.
  • Improves overall traffic flow and safety.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced safety on the roads.
  • Improved traffic efficiency.
  • Reduced risk of accidents.

Commercial Applications:

Potential commercial applications include:

  • Integration into autonomous vehicles.
  • Licensing to automotive manufacturers.
  • Implementation in fleet management systems.

Prior Art:

Original Abstract Submitted

in response to an initiation of a lane-change, a speed of a host vehicle in a current lane can be adjusted to establish a forward longitudinal distance from a lead vehicle in a target lane. the host vehicle is then moved from a first lateral position to a second lateral position in the current lane based on determining that a rear longitudinal distance of the host vehicle from a trailing vehicle in the target lane is less than a rear distance threshold, and then is additionally moved the host vehicle from the second lateral position to a third lateral position in the current lane based on determining that the rear longitudinal distance is increasing. when the forward longitudinal distance exceeds a forward distance threshold and the rear longitudinal distance exceeds the rear distance threshold, the vehicle is moved from the current lane to the target lane.
