MANAGEMENT LINK FOR MULTI-LINK OPERATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240292234 titled 'MANAGEMENT LINK FOR MULTI-LINK OPERATION

Simplified Explanation

The patent application discusses a method to reduce network bandwidth usage during the discovery process in a wireless network. It involves a management AP that processes beacon frames from affiliated APs, reducing duplication and improving efficiency.

  • The patent proposes using a management AP to process beacon frames from all affiliated APs, reducing duplication and conserving network bandwidth.
  • Affiliated APs send lighter beacon frames, indicating where to find the full beacon frames, improving network efficiency.
  • The management AP conveys the profiles of all affiliated APs, while other APs signal their status using a link ID.
  • Non-AP devices can configure a connection with the management AP based on the information in the beacon frames, enhancing network management.

Key Features and Innovation

- Use of a management AP to process beacon frames from multiple affiliated APs. - Lighter beacon frames from non-management APs to reduce duplication and conserve network bandwidth. - Efficient signaling of the management AP and network status using link IDs.

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in various wireless network environments where efficient management of network resources is crucial. It can be beneficial in large-scale deployments where network bandwidth optimization is essential.

Problems Solved

- Reduction of network bandwidth usage during the discovery process. - Improved efficiency in managing multiple APs in a wireless network. - Enhanced network management capabilities for non-AP devices.

Benefits

- Reduced duplication of beacon frames leading to improved network performance. - Efficient utilization of network bandwidth for data transmission. - Simplified network management for both APs and non-AP devices.

Commercial Applications

The technology can be utilized in enterprise wireless networks, public Wi-Fi deployments, and IoT networks where efficient network management is essential for optimal performance and scalability.

Questions about the Technology

How does the use of a management AP improve network efficiency?

The management AP processes beacon frames from all affiliated APs, reducing duplication and conserving network bandwidth, leading to improved efficiency in network management.

What benefits does the signaling of the management AP using link IDs provide?

Signaling the management AP using link IDs allows non-AP devices to configure connections with the management AP, enhancing network management capabilities and improving overall network efficiency.

Original Abstract Submitted

ml beacon frames sent by ap mld during ml discovery report the profiles of all the affiliated aps. this duplication over multiple channels substantially reduces network bandwidth available for data transmission. a management ap amongst the affiliated aps is selected for processing the management and control frames. the ml beacon frames from the management ap convey the profiles of all the affiliated aps, while the other affiliated aps send lighter ml beacon frames that for instance indicate where to find the full ml beacon frames. the ml beacon frames hence signal, using a link id, which one of the affiliated aps is the management ap. upon receiving a light ml beacon frame, the non-ap mld can configure one of its affiliated non-ap station to communicate with the management ap, and then can switch the association procedure over this management link.
