SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SMART PLACEMENT OF VIRTUAL OBJECTS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240242457 titled 'SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SMART PLACEMENT OF VIRTUAL OBJECTS

Simplified Explanation: This patent application describes how an electronic device can display virtual objects in a three-dimensional extended reality environment based on the characteristics of the physical environment it is in.

  • The electronic device automatically determines the location and orientation to display virtual objects in the extended reality environment.
  • Users can request the display of virtual objects in the extended reality environment through an input.
  • The device compares the physical environment's characteristics with the virtual objects' characteristics to determine where and how to display the virtual objects.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Automatic determination of location and orientation for displaying virtual objects in extended reality.
  • Comparison of physical environment characteristics with virtual objects to optimize display.
  • User input for requesting the display of virtual objects in the extended reality environment.

Potential Applications: This technology can be applied in gaming, virtual tours, interior design, and augmented reality applications.

Problems Solved: This technology addresses the challenge of seamlessly integrating virtual objects into real-world environments in extended reality settings.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced user experience in extended reality environments.
  • Improved visualization and interaction with virtual objects.
  • Seamless integration of virtual and physical environments.

Commercial Applications: The technology can be utilized in gaming, real estate, retail, and education industries to create immersive and interactive experiences for users.

Prior Art: Prior art related to this technology may include patents or research on augmented reality, virtual reality, and extended reality display technologies.

Frequently Updated Research: Researchers are continually exploring advancements in extended reality technologies, including improved object recognition and spatial mapping algorithms.

Questions about Extended Reality: 1. How does this technology impact the future of user interaction with virtual objects in real-world environments? 2. What are the potential privacy concerns associated with displaying virtual objects in extended reality environments?

Original Abstract Submitted

in some aspects, an electronic device displays virtual objects in a three-dimensional extended reality (“xr”) environment with automatically determined location(s) and/or orientation(s). in some aspects, the electronic device receives an input corresponding to a request to display the virtual objects in the xr environment. in some aspects, in response to the input, the electronic device displays the virtual objects in the xr environment. in some aspects, the electronic device compares characteristics of a physical environment of the electronic device with characteristics of the at least the subset of the collection of the virtual objects, including determining first locations of walls of the physical environment relative to at least one of a second location of the user interface of the first application or a third location of a user of the electronic device, to determine the location(s) and orientation(s) at which to display the virtual object(s).
