COMPRESSOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18733041 titled 'COMPRESSOR

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a compressor that utilizes a stack of electrochemical cells to produce compressed hydrogen by moving hydrogen from an anode to a cathode through the application of a voltage. The compressor includes channels for a heating medium to flow through, allowing for efficient operation.

  • The compressor includes a stack of electrochemical cells with an anode, cathode, and electrolyte membrane.
  • A voltage applicator applies a voltage to move hydrogen from the anode to the cathode, producing compressed hydrogen.
  • An end plate in the stack has channels for a heating medium to flow through, ensuring optimal performance.
  • The channels in the end plate and stack are designed for efficient heat transfer and operation of the compressor.
  • An external channel allows the heating medium to flow through the system effectively.

Original Abstract Submitted

A compressor includes a stack of electrochemical cells each including an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte membrane sandwiched therebetween, an end plate at an end in a stacking direction of the stack, and a voltage applicator that applies a voltage between the anode and the cathode, wherein, the compressor causes, by using the voltage applicator to apply the voltage, hydrogen in a hydrogen-containing gas fed to the anode to move to the cathode and produces compressed hydrogen, the end plate has a first channel through which a heating medium flows, the stack has a second channel extending therethrough and connected to the first channel, the first channel has a smaller cross-sectional area than the second channel and includes an annular channel and a transverse passage extending across the annular channel, and an external channel disposed outside the stack and through which the heating medium flows is connected to the transverse passage.
