METHOD, APPARATUS AND SYSTEM FOR ENCODING AND DECODING A TREE OF BLOCKS OF VIDEO SAMPLES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18680483 titled 'METHOD, APPARATUS AND SYSTEM FOR ENCODING AND DECODING A TREE OF BLOCKS OF VIDEO SAMPLES

The patent application describes a system and method for decoding a transform block for a color channel of an image frame from a video bitstream.

  • The method involves determining the chroma format of the image frame, which includes subsampled chroma channels relative to the luma channel.
  • It further includes determining the coefficient group size of the transform block, up to 16 samples, based solely on the transform block size and independent of the color plane and chroma plane subsampling.
  • The transform block is then decoded using coefficient groups of the determined size from the video bitstream.

Potential Applications: - Video compression technology - Image processing systems - Multimedia applications

Problems Solved: - Efficient decoding of color channels in video frames - Improved compression and transmission of video data

Benefits: - Enhanced video quality - Reduced bandwidth requirements - Faster video decoding process

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Video Compression Technology for Multimedia Applications This technology can be used in video streaming services, video conferencing platforms, and digital media production tools to enhance video quality and optimize data transmission.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does this technology improve video compression efficiency? 2. What are the key differences between this method and traditional video decoding techniques?

Original Abstract Submitted

A system and method of decoding a transform block for a colour channel of an image frame from a video bitstream. The method comprises determining a chroma format of the image frame, the chroma format having chroma channels of the image frame being subsampled relative to a luma channel of the image frame; determining a coefficient group size of the transform block, the coefficient group size being a largest area of the transform block of up to 16 samples, the coefficient group size being determined based only on the transform block size and independent of both (i) a colour plane of the transform block and (ii) colour plane subsampling due to the determined chroma format; and decoding the transform block using coefficient groups of the determined size from the video bitstream
