METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR SELECTIVE TISSUE ABLATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18674565 titled 'METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR SELECTIVE TISSUE ABLATION

Simplified Explanation: This patent application discloses catheter systems and methods for applying DC voltage to drive irreversible electroporation quickly and selectively.

  • The apparatus includes a voltage pulse generator and an electrode controller.
  • The voltage pulse generator produces a pulsed voltage waveform.
  • The electrode controller is coupled to the voltage pulse generator and a medical device with electrodes.
  • The selection module in the electrode controller chooses a subset of electrodes, designating some as anodes and others as cathodes.
  • The pulse delivery module then delivers the pulsed voltage waveform to the selected electrodes.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Catheter systems for selective and rapid application of DC voltage for irreversible electroporation.
  • Apparatus includes a voltage pulse generator and an electrode controller.
  • Selection module identifies anodes and cathodes among a series of electrodes.
  • Pulse delivery module delivers pulsed voltage waveform to selected electrodes.

Potential Applications:

  • Medical procedures requiring irreversible electroporation.
  • Targeted cancer treatment.
  • Tissue ablation in minimally invasive surgeries.

Problems Solved:

  • Efficient and targeted application of DC voltage for electroporation.

Original Abstract Submitted

Catheter systems and methods for the selective and rapid application of DC voltage to drive irreversible electroporation are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a voltage pulse generator and an electrode controller. The voltage pulse generator is configured to produce a pulsed voltage waveform. The electrode controller is configured to be operably coupled to the voltage pulse generator and a medical device including a series of electrodes. The electrode controller includes a selection module and a pulse delivery module. The selection module is configured to select a subset of electrodes from the series of electrodes. The selection module is configured identify at least one electrode as an anode and at least one electrode as a cathode. The pulse delivery module is configured to deliver an output signal associated with the pulsed voltage waveform to the subset of electrodes.
