CONTEXT-SENSITIVE HANDLING OF INTERRUPTIONS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18658815 titled 'CONTEXT-SENSITIVE HANDLING OF INTERRUPTIONS

The abstract of the patent application describes a system where a list of notification items with associated urgency values is received, and when a relevant information item is detected, the urgency values of the notification items are adjusted accordingly.

  • The system detects an information item, such as a communication or a change in user context.
  • If the information item is relevant to the urgency value of a notification item, the urgency value is adjusted.
  • When the adjusted urgency value meets a predetermined threshold, an audio prompt is provided to the user.

Potential Applications: - This technology can be applied in notification systems to prioritize alerts based on relevance to the user. - It can be used in communication platforms to ensure important messages are delivered promptly.

Problems Solved: - Helps users manage notifications more effectively by adjusting urgency levels based on relevance. - Ensures important information is not missed amidst a large number of notifications.

Benefits: - Improves user experience by delivering timely and relevant notifications. - Increases efficiency in handling notifications by prioritizing important alerts.

Commercial Applications: Title: "Enhanced Notification Prioritization System for Improved User Engagement" This technology can be utilized in various industries such as messaging apps, email clients, and productivity tools to enhance user engagement and satisfaction.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the system determine the relevance of an information item to the urgency value of a notification item? - The system likely uses algorithms to analyze the content of the information item and compare it to the urgency value of the notification item.

2. What factors are considered when adjusting the urgency value of a notification item? - Factors such as the content of the information item, the user's preferences, and the predetermined threshold are likely taken into account when adjusting the urgency value.

Original Abstract Submitted

A list of notification items is received, the list including a plurality of notification items, wherein each respective one of the plurality of notification items is associated with a respective urgency value. An information item is detected. In some implementations, the information item is a communication (e.g., an email). In some implementations, the information item is a change in context of a user. Upon determining that the information item is relevant to the urgency value of the first notification item, the urgency value of the first notification item is adjusted. Upon determining that the adjusted urgency value satisfies the predetermined threshold, a first audio prompt is provided to a user.
