VENTRICULAR ASSIST DEVICE WITH OPTICAL FIBER - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18652959 titled 'VENTRICULAR ASSIST DEVICE WITH OPTICAL FIBER

The patent application describes an apparatus and methods involving a pump-outlet tube that traverses an aortic valve of a subject, with the proximal end in the subject's aorta and the distal end in the left ventricle. An impeller within the tube pumps blood through it, while a frame around the impeller includes a cylindrical portion and a proximal conical portion. An optical fiber extends from outside the subject's body to the frame, allowing direct fluid communication with the left-ventricular bloodstream.

  • Pump-outlet tube traverses aortic valve and extends from aorta to left ventricle
  • Impeller within tube pumps blood through it
  • Frame around impeller includes cylindrical and conical portions
  • Optical fiber extends from outside body to frame for direct fluid communication with left-ventricular bloodstream

Original Abstract Submitted

Apparatus and methods are described including a pump-outlet tube configured to traverse an aortic valve of a subject, such that the proximal end of the pump-outlet tube is disposed within the subject's aorta and the distal end of the pump-outlet tube is disposed within the subject's left ventricle. An impeller is configured to be disposed within the left ventricle within the pump-outlet tube, and to pump blood through the pump-outlet tube. A frame, disposed around the impeller, includes a cylindrical portion and a proximal conical portion. A proximal end of an optical fiber is disposed outside the subject's body and the distal end of the optical fiber is coupled to the proximal conical portion of the frame such that the distal end of the optical fiber extends to outside the pump-outlet tube in direct fluid communication with left-ventricular bloodstream of the subject. Other applications are also described.
