METHODS OF VIDEO PICTURE CODING WITH SUB-BLOCK MERGE SIMPLIFICATION AND RELATED APPARATUSES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18648745 titled 'METHODS OF VIDEO PICTURE CODING WITH SUB-BLOCK MERGE SIMPLIFICATION AND RELATED APPARATUSES

Simplified Explanation: The patent application describes a method for predicting temporal motion vectors in a video sequence by analyzing spatial neighboring blocks in the current picture.

  • The method determines if spatial neighboring blocks in the current picture use a collocated picture as a reference.
  • When a neighboring block uses a collocated picture as a reference, the method uses its motion vector as a temporal vector for the current block.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Predicts temporal motion vectors in video sequences.
  • Analyzes spatial neighboring blocks for reference picture usage.
  • Utilizes motion vectors from neighboring blocks for temporal prediction.

Potential Applications: This technology can be used in video compression algorithms, video editing software, and video streaming services.

Problems Solved: This technology addresses the challenge of accurately predicting motion vectors in video sequences for efficient compression and playback.

Benefits:

  • Improved video compression efficiency.
  • Enhanced video quality.
  • Reduced bandwidth requirements for video streaming.

Commercial Applications: Potential commercial applications include video encoding software, video streaming platforms, and surveillance systems.

Prior Art: Prior research in video compression and motion estimation algorithms may be relevant to this technology.

Frequently Updated Research: Stay updated on advancements in video compression techniques, motion estimation algorithms, and video processing technologies.

Questions about temporal motion vector prediction: 1. How does this technology improve video compression efficiency? 2. What are the potential applications of this method in video editing software?

Original Abstract Submitted

There are provided mechanisms for temporal motion vector prediction of a current picture in a series of pictures of a video sequence. The method comprises determining, for a current block of the current picture, whether any one of: left, top, top-right and left-bottom spatial neighboring blocks of the current block in the current picture uses a collocated picture as a reference picture. The method further comprises, when the determination is that one of the left, top, top-right and left-bottom spatial neighboring block uses a collocated picture as a reference picture, using a motion vector of the one of the spatial neighboring blocks as a temporal vector of the current block.
