IMMUTABLE STORAGE OF SNAPSHOT DATA IN A PUBLIC CLOUD ENVIRONMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18615911 titled 'IMMUTABLE STORAGE OF SNAPSHOT DATA IN A PUBLIC CLOUD ENVIRONMENT

The abstract describes a data management system that supports immutable storage of snapshot data entities in a cloud environment. The system determines retention periods and immutability periods for these entities, extending the immutability period for some based on the retention period being greater than a threshold duration.

  • The data management system supports immutable storage of snapshot data entities in a cloud environment.
  • It determines retention periods and immutability periods for the snapshot data entities.
  • The system can extend the immutability period for a snapshot data entity if the retention period is greater than or equal to a threshold duration.
  • It may refrain from extending the immutability period for another snapshot data entity if the retention period is less than the threshold duration.

Potential Applications: - Cloud data management systems - Data backup and recovery solutions - Compliance and data governance tools

Problems Solved: - Ensuring data integrity and immutability in cloud environments - Efficient management of snapshot data entities - Compliance with data retention policies

Benefits: - Enhanced data security and integrity - Simplified data management processes - Improved compliance with retention policies

Commercial Applications: Title: "Enhancing Data Security with Immutable Storage in Cloud Environments" This technology can be utilized by cloud service providers, data management companies, and organizations with strict data retention requirements. It can improve data security, streamline compliance processes, and enhance overall data management efficiency.

Questions about Immutable Storage in Cloud Environments: 1. How does the data management system determine the immutability period for snapshot data entities? The system determines the immutability period based on the retention period and a threshold duration. 2. What are the potential drawbacks of extending the immutability period for snapshot data entities? Extending the immutability period may lead to increased storage costs and potential challenges in data retrieval.

Original Abstract Submitted

A data management system may support techniques for immutable storage of snapshot data entities, which may each include data corresponding to one or more snapshots, in a cloud environment. The data management system may determine respective retention periods and respective immutability periods for the snapshot data entities. The data management system may extend the respective immutability period for a first snapshot data entity based on the respective retention period for the first snapshot data entity being greater than or equal to a threshold duration. Additionally or alternatively, the data management system may maintain (refrain from extending) the respective immutability period for a second snapshot data entity based at least in part on the respective retention period for the second snapshot data entity being less than the threshold duration.
