Identifying The Position Of A Horn Honk Or Other Acoustical Information Using Multiple Autonomous Vehicles - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18608300 titled 'Identifying The Position Of A Horn Honk Or Other Acoustical Information Using Multiple Autonomous Vehicles

The technology described in the patent application involves determining the source of a horn honk or other noise in the vicinity of one or more self-driving vehicles. By utilizing real-time data from a group of self-driving vehicles regarding acoustical information they receive, the technology can pinpoint the actual location of the noise source in the environment.

  • Leveraging real-time information from a group of self-driving vehicles
  • Triangulating the location of the noise source using the vehicles' positions and acoustical sensor arrangements
  • Utilizing additional sensor data, map data, and other information to refine the location of the noise source
  • Modifying driving operations based on the identified noise source
  • Using the information for reinforcement learning in future driving situations

Potential Applications: - Enhancing safety and situational awareness for self-driving vehicles - Improving response to external stimuli in autonomous driving scenarios

Problems Solved: - Identifying the source of external noises in the environment - Enhancing the ability of self-driving vehicles to react to auditory cues

What are the potential implications of using reinforcement learning in autonomous driving scenarios? - By utilizing reinforcement learning based on identified noise sources, self-driving vehicles can improve their decision-making processes and adaptability in future driving situations.

Original Abstract Submitted

The technology relates to determining a source of a horn honk or other noise in an environment around one or more self-driving vehicles. Aspects of the technology leverage real-time information from a group of self-driving vehicles regarding received acoustical information. The location and pose of each self-driving vehicle in the group, along with the precise arrangement of acoustical sensors on each vehicle, can be used to triangulate or otherwise identify the actual location in the environment for the origin of the horn honk or other sound. Other sensor information, map data, and additional data can be used narrow down or refine the location of a likely noise source. Once the location and source of the noise is known, each self-driving vehicle can use that information to modify current driving operations and/or use it as part of a reinforcement learning approach for future driving situations.
